Nike Shanks the McIlroy Launch
Well, the wind chill has officially dropped below ZERO here in the state that is in the top five for golf courses per capita…so what do you do? Watch a lot of golf on TV!! Yes it’s so cold that I even found myself watching the European Tour event in Abu Dhabi during the wee hours of the morning.
If you follow golf at all you know that Nike called a huge press conference last week to announce that Rory McIlroy, the twenty-something phenom, would be switching his golf gear and playing ALL Nike equipment. Let’s face it, Tiger isn’t tearing it up these days (at least on the golf course) and McIlroy looks like a can’t miss for the next 15 years. It seems like a no-brainer, so what could possibly go wrong???
Nike shoots a new commercial with Tiger Woods and the young McIlroy trying to outdo each other on the driving range, totally ripping off the Michael Jordan vs Larry Bird “H.O.R.S.E” campaign that McDonald’s did back in ’93. As soon as I saw it, I prayed to the Advertising Karma Gods to strike down those evil ad thieves and oh boy, did they listen.
McIlroy didn’t even sniff the cut line for the weekend shooting 75-75. He hooked drives and putted so poorly with his Nike putter on Thursday, he switched back to his Titleist putter on Friday.
Woods was playing just good enough to make the cut, but then was also struck down by the “Gods” on the 11th hole of the second day when he was given a 2-stroke penalty for taking an illegal drop out of a sandy area back on the 4th hole. This bizarre penalty caused Woods to finish the second day at 3 over par, missing the cut by 1 stroke.
So, Rory misses the cut…then so does Tiger. Just like the commercial!! Somehow, I don’t think that’s what the mighty Nike had in mind. Karma is a bitch! And somewhere out there is an advertising creative team from the 90’s wearing a smile today.
